SINGAPORE air stewardess Lilian Lee has clinched the Miss Intercontinental Asia Pacific title at the 37th Miss Intercontinental Pageant held in Zarbse, Poland, last Saturday.
The 24-year-old competed with 56 beauties from all over the world. Colombia's Cristina Carmago, 23, was the overall winner, taking the Miss Intercontinental title.

Local pageant organiser iGlamour Singapore helped Lee to prepare for the pageant and her gowns were sponsored by boutique Blum & Co.

The former Singapore Polytechnic student was chosen as the Singapore representative after winning the Miss Singapore Sweetheart pageant here.

She told online portal Stomp: 'When you're there, they don't call you by your name but by your country's name. So it was an extremely proud moment for me when they called for 'Miss Singapore' in front of an international audience.'

The pageant started in 1971 on the island of Aruba in the Caribbean as a way to attract tourists. It was held there for 10 years and has since been held in different countries each year, says the organiser, World Beauty Organization. - Straits Times Life!

Lars and the Real Girl

"If there were a little more silence, if we all kept quiet. . . maybe we could understand something." - Federico Fellini, Director

Fedrico Fellini is not the director of this movie, but this quote appeared in one of the featurettes of the movie. Lars and the Real Girl is about Lars, who purchased a "love doll", named her Bianca, gave her a backstory, and make belief that she's her girlfriend for real. the entire community played along, just so he wld feel fine about it.

the plot sounds like a potential comedy with gags about sanity, sex dolls, and small town idiosyncracies. instead, the film steered clear of the stereotypes and becomes one of the most moving stories i've seen this year. above being a comedy, it is a story about humanity and a community with big hearts. while it may sound incredible having an entire community play along with the delusions, it is not hard to believe so once you see this film. large credit goes to Ryan Gosling, whom i truely believe to be the most talented young actor out there today, as well as writer Nancy Oliver and director Craig Gillespie. they could have made it junkfull of rubbish stereotypes and make stupid fun like "i now pronounce you chuck and larry", but instead, it's understated, never over the top, always surprising, and ultimately very moving.

oh. and i love Emily Mortimer. =)

i feel like i am fast turning into a cry-baby. this is the second time i cried durin a movie in recent memory. damn.

go watch.

Jennifer Hudson's family murdered

Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Hudson's mother, Darnell Donerson, 57, and brother, 29-year-old Jason Hudson, have been shot dead.

Jennifer Hudson's mother and brother have been shot dead.
The Oscar-winning actress' two family members - mother Darnell Donerson, 57, and 29-year-old sibling Jason Hudson - were brutally slain on Friday (25.10.08) in their Chicago home. Their bodies were discovered by Jennifer's sister Julia Hudson.
The 'Dreamgirls' star's representative Lisa Kasteler said: 'We can confirm that there is an ongoing investigation concerning the deaths of Jennifer Hudson's mother, Darnell Donerson, and her brother, Jason Hudson. No further comment will be made and the family has asked that their privacy be respected at this difficult time.'
Upon hearing the tragic news 27-year-old Jennifer, who was reported to have started 'screaming', immediately flew to Chicago from Tampa, Florida.
Police are also searching for Jennifer's nephew, Julia's seven-year-old son Julian King, who had been staying at his grandmother's house in the city's South Side district and is currently missing.
Jennifer's brother-in-law William Balfour - Julia's estranged husband - is currently in custody and is being questioned about the double-murder and the boy's disappearance.
At the time of writing, police had confirmed 27-year-old William, who served seven years in prison for attempted murder and carjacking in 1999, is a suspect for the killings but is yet to be charged.
He was arrested just a few hours after the bodies were found - Darnell in the living room with a gun shot to her head and Jason, who had been blasted in the chest, in a bedroom.
Julia has issued an emotional plea for the return of her son.
She said: 'I don't care who you are, just let the baby go. I just want my son. He doesn't deserve this. I don't know what else to do but pray.'
Police have revealed they are talking to several other people in connection to the incident.

Jennifer Hudson's mom and brother murdered; suspect being questioned

Police are questioning a suspect in the murder of the mother and brother of Oscar-winning actress and singer Jennifer Hudson, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Darnell Donerson, 57, and Jason Hudson, 29, were gunned down in a home on the South Side of Chicago on Friday, according the the Chicago Police Department. Authorities are also searching for a 7-year-old boy, believed to be Hudson's nephew, who is missing from the scene.

Police told CNN that the bodies were discovered at about 3 p.m. Friday, when a relative found Donerson (pictured, with Hudson at the 2007 Academy Awards) shot to death on the living room floor of her home. When police arrived at the scene, they discovered the brother's dead body in a bedroom. Authorities have issued an Amber Alert for the missing boy, Julian King.

Hudson, a former American Idol contestant, was said to be on her way to Chicago Friday night; her representative has yet to make a statement. (Reporting by Mandi Bierly and CNN)

林忆莲

my third Sandy Lam concert did not disappoint, and is indeed the best night of the year so far. during the second or fourth song, i smiled. it's not a smile of joy or one you have when someone tells you a joke. it's a smile of content. at that moment i felt immensely contented, more than being able to see her live or hear her sing, but being able to be in that moment, where everything is right in front of you, and you feel so blessed that everything is in its element and you can almost fade away without regret. it's a smile you have when faced with beauty beyond words. i rarely, and i do mean rarely, have that kind of smile.

Sandy brought the best of her recent "Come as you are, be who you are" HK show, at the new Star Hall, to Spore. the HK show was against traditional Sandy Lam concerts. the colour concepts were limited to white and blue. the repertoire was filled with mostly little-known songs from her albums and given a new arrangement. with less than 3 costume change and almost no dance sequence, the show relied heavily on interactive media, fresh arrangements, and of course Sandy's impeccable voice. it was met with extreme reviews: those who loved it raved its fresh take and reinvention. those who didnt love it felt sidelined by the unknown songs.

several segments from today's concert were exactly the same: the accapella 走在大街的女子, the conga arrangement of 逃离钢筋森林, 匆匆's bossa nova and 哭's downplayed arrangements, etc etc. but of course there were new segments, like the dali-esque interactive media

the caligraphy

and my personal fav: Sandy's timeless face. her face was there all the time when she sang seated at the stairs. in the background her face was omnipresent, succumbed to colour changes, slashes across her face, burns, tears, etc etc. but her face was always there. it was such a smart smart smart design, simple yet brilliantly signified her career, and perhaps personal, triumphs and turmoils, yet almost always emerged unscatted.

The energy in this Singapore stop is slightly different from Hk's. i guess she prob knows tt audience here love more upbeat songs, and it's rather hard to get the Spore audience up and dancing. therefore the tone of the concert was tight and featured many choreographed dance routines. as promised, it was heavily mixed with upbeat numbers. albeit less dong4 gan3 than the dance medleys in her previous show here, this one had the kinda upbeat songs tt u cant really dance much to, unless u know the song well. while it's good that she is catering to local preference, i secretly wished she'd done more radically different segments and omit the HK routines all-together.

the Love Sandy medley, featuring songs fr the Love Sandy album, was refreshing. i wished she sang the full versions. while she didnt sing "streets of temptation", i cried when she sang 至少还有你 and "I Swear" as her encore number. during 至少还有你, everyone in the audience was singing along to it and she crackled a little, almost breaking into tears. while it was a bad move to feature a fast number after that, hearing everyone in the audience sing along to one of the biggest hits of hers is SUCH A GOOD FEELING. big sing-alongs are to-die-for.

everyone ran to the front of the stage towars the end, screaming for an encore and wishing she would appear once more, and she did. even us who were seated slightly further away got up and went forward as well.

i was also glad the background vocalists fr the HK gig were here as well. they were fantastic. there were moments when they came forth to the stage and danced with the dancers and the guitarists. Anthony Wong also came forth during one of the numbers and did a dance routine. it felt like a family gathering and it was truely nice to see them given much placement and acknowledgement in the gig.

at the start of the night, i had this thought. what is it that distinguishes one singer from another, and is there such a thing as "he/she's more worth it?" i was thinking along the lines of A*mei and Lee Hom, both of which will be here soon. vocal technique, voice quality, stage presence, and natural talents aside, i think idolising someone is something very personal. there is really no rule hindering us from falling for a particular act. whatever u admire in him is an extension of your self. the personal experience of hearing or seeing the right thing at the right time helps as well. thou i can say that "this singer sings better, why u dun watch this instead?", it's the personal experience of the audience that determines it instead. i've fallen for Sandy since P5, and her songs have accompanied me through nights mugging for exam, sang me to sleep, and made me cry and feel blessed. some songs expressed my state of mind, others made me wana move along. therefore i cant really say Sandy is better than Amei and Lee Hom (though deep in my heart i know she is), because someone might have cried/danced/mugged/slept to AMei and lee Hom as well. heck, mayb even Fahrenheit as well. a friend said this:

"每个人的感触,感动因为生活的机遇有很多不同
所以也就会在不同的时刻,有不同的感触
要分享了解一个人的感动
其实需要对一个人有所了解
他的感动的使因
才会有意义"

all in all, best night of the year. Sandy has the best fans, loyal ones who have accompanied her throughout the years, flew all the way from HK to Spore, and those that stood up, danced, extended their modern lightsticks, and sang along with her. during 至少还有你's big sing-along, the camera caught a glimpse of a guy who had his eyes closed and was so engrossed in singing. once again, it disproves the fact tt local audiences are stuck to our seats and unwilling to move. i saw two person who brought signboards and i wished i had one as well. =(

much thanks to PJ and Estine who accompanied me. its a pleasure to be in the company of people with similar interests. =)

再見悲哀

作曲:Eric Kwok
填詞:林夕
編曲:Eric Kwok/Ted Lo

(ex) slackers gathering!

WE MEET AGAIN!

meeting at Holland V feels very deja-vuish, as one of our outings last yr was there as well. while last year we had Vietnam food, this year i got my pick of Thai Express. but we still ended up at Cold Rocks for some smashing ice-cream =)

Thai express black pepper soft shell crab rice was SOOO SPICY that i can feel a burning sensation at the back of my neck. damn terrible. i miss soft shell crab =( but the tapioca was delicious =) then we took some pic while eating ice-cream. the last pic is very deja-vu 2007. we took a similar one (i'm too lazy to dig it out fr my EHH).

it was so hilarious we were talkin about Haz's newfound muscles tt resembles Madonna, which led to Halloween costume talks, fr xmen, to cartoon characters, etc. Haz will be Janet Jackson sans Nipplegate, Shoe will be Michael Jackson cos of her whitewashed suntan-lotioned face, and quin will be Pam Anderson. er hem. hahahah
and i will be baby spice. "if u wannabe my lover, la la la" hahahahahahahahah

and Shoe, as always, said two very quote-worthy lines:

to Haz,
Would you rather be emo, or Madonna?

and on the US presidential elections,

When the world is in trouble, you tend to pick someone who is different.

Nothing Really Matters

i am an organised person. or rather, i'd like myself to be. i like my cd collection to be arranged according to size and date i bought it. i like to divide my wardrobe into the common-wears and the exiled. i like to date my homeworks.

but sometimes not everything is as simple as black and white. as much as i love black and white, i also love the grey in between, the vagueness and the oddity, the beauty of it that does not lie on either side, the weirdness and the exotic and the sidelined.

Ray Of Light, Madonna's comeback album from 1998 remains one of her best IMO. No album from her thereafter matched in terms of artistry and coherence. William Orbit, at his prime, gave Madge his best work. part urban-chick, part geisha, part Hindu devout, part spiritual mother, part celebrity, the album was beyond any classification.

this almost nihilistic song see's Madge reincarnating into spasing pop-art geisha. high concept, innovative, and utterly beautiful, it is one of my favourite videos. who says pop has to be about spilling boobs, sexy flashy cars and blings, and pretty girls in pretty make up? who says the odd need to be understood? cant it be what it is without reading too much into it? cant it be different?

It's BRITNEY, BITCH!

"It's Britney, Bitch!"
tt has become the definitive line to describe Ms Spears these days.
slowly inching back to her heydays as a slick dance machine and provocative pop songstress with a string of classic pop hits, this is her latest bid at a comeback.

what she needs is a huge single in the reins of Beyonce's "Irreplaceable". it's not so hard for a comeback really. see Madonna(Ray of Light), Kylie (Spinning Around), and Cher (Believe). she needa a HIT!

this one doesnt come close, but still a great pop confectionary.

WOMANIZER!

the same director did her TOXIC vid. hmmm. he seems to have an affinity for a multi-personality, naked Britney, and Britney pushing men into bed. hmmmmm.

In this Video she's a flight attendant on a concorde-like airliner, who after receiving a phone call, pushes an overweight man into the lavatory and French kisses him. Spears pulls the face of the man off, revealing a handsome man portrayed by model Matt Felker, and steals his wallet and a key. Spears is then shown in Paris, in a black pleather catsuit and with wavy red hair, and is picked up by Tyson Beckford on a Ducati 999. The pair drives to the "Toxic Industries" factory, where she uses the key to steal a toxin and passes through a series of security measures. Spears then scales a building, now in a superhero-style costume and with black hair, and enters the apartment of a former lover, played by actor Martin Henderson. They make out and Spears pours the toxin in his mouth, killing him. After planting a kiss on him, she jumps off the balcony, landing back in the airplane in her original attire, and winks at the camera before returning to her duties as a flight attendant. The video closes as it began, with birds flying behind the aircraft. The video is intercut with sequences of Spears with hundreds of diamonds glued to her body, wearing only a G-string.

sounds like fun!

what if this is as good as it gets?

picking sides

Obama is proactive, McCain has the experience.
Obama talks about solutions, Mc Cain has the "records".
Obama has youth, McCain has experience.
Obama looks and walks like an energetic Democrat, while McCain (though less energetic and almost limping)oozes polite and remembers praises.
Obama is eloquent. McCain has good rebuttals.

oh, and Obama is listed in 8-Day's "40 sexiest people over 40".

i guess he wins based on that?

Against general presumptions that I am one only interested in entertainment news (there's a difference between news and gossip, though a thin fine line), i actually sat through more than half of the second US Presidential debate held in Nashville Tennessee (third one next wed in NYC). There were lots of talks on natural energy, taming Russia to prevent cold war, Iran and Iraq, Afghan, health care, and of cos, the infamous economy and its tax cuts. of course there were opposing opinions with regards to whether they should input more money into the economy by raising taxes.

watching them debate was rather interesting. McCain was brutal in putting words in Obama's mouth, constantly giving off his own implied statements and scrutinising his policies, while being polite and calling the audience "my friends". this is my first attempt at trying to catch up on the US election and i must say i was rather hooked to find out more, starting with a trip to the lib to find the recent issue of TIME magazine with them on the cover.

if only picking sides were easy. one had the energetic burst to make changes and you know he is going to make a difference; eloquent and charismatic. the other one is an experienced old fox unnew to the big guns, even with a few sly tricks up his sleeves. it's like choosing between what is good for you, and what is it that you want. it's like picking someone to be a school councillor: pick the one that would make changes but prob break some rules in the process, or the trustworthy loyal kid typical of council material.

if it was as easy as noticing their body language, Obama wins hands down.

these few days, i've been pondering. i realise i do not need people who test my patience, nor dishonest friends who pry. it would be wrong to say that i don't need friends, almost hypocritical. but i would rather do without, than deal with insincerity. i should be glad that i at least have a few whom i can depend on, and a few who truely care. once again, it's not about the number of years. it's about genuine, honest feelings towards each other.

so don't rub me the wrong way.

depravation

the last 2 nights were spent at Bec's place having Comedy Night and "assorted titles" movie marathons.
though i've watched Moulin Rouge more than twice without once dropping a single tear, I cried 3 times yesterday.
i had no idea why either, it just did.

then Jack Neo lost me with his filthy product placement, choppy randomness, and excess Hokkien in Money No Enough 2.

sleep depravation really can make someone sussceptible and vulnerable. it heightens ya emotions and does funny things to your moods. walking becomes pensive, crossing the road becomes frightening. i was afraid that i might cross the road regardless of the traffic light (the pitholes of jay-walking) and get myself killed.i rode on Seng's bike on our way to Liu's grandma's funeral. it was my second time on a bike and i was a bit jittery, wondering if i need to write death notes before i took his lift.

in the end, i've made up my mind to learn the bike next year.

I was feeling intense sadness yesterday, it was unfounded and not the reason why tears fell during the movie. sleep really can do things to ya head. i saw my reflection on the train window, and sighed at how i seem to have aged into a 30 yr old (virgin).

thanks to Bec for the delicacies and, as always, the hospitality. love love love the pineapple rice meesiam scrambled egg dory fish tofu with egg apple pai gu soup curry plain rice nasi lemak. i feel so guilty eat so much hahahahahha. wait till i learn how to cook next time =)

Sarah McLachlan - Do what you have to do
where is she when i need her. "Building a Mystery" is one of my all-time favourite albums. it's a modern classic, and this is one of the songs that i like best in that album.

Sufjan Stevens - John Wayne Gacy Jr

this is a song abt a serial killer who buried his victims in his backyard.
Sufjan Stevens is one of my favs. he plans to make an album for each state of America. this is from his album for Illinois.

His father was a drinker
And his mother cried in bed
Folding John Wayne's T-shirts
When the swingset hit his head
The neighbors they adored him
For his humor and his conversation
Look underneath the house there
Find the few living things
Rotting fast in their sleep of the dead
Twenty-seven people, even more
They were boys with their cars, summer jobs
Oh my God

Are you one of them?

He dressed up like a clown for them
With his face paint white and red
And on his best behavior
In a dark room on the bed he kissed them all
He'd kill ten thousand people
With a sleight of his hand
Running far, running fast to the dead
He took off all their clothes for them
He put a cloth on their lips
Quiet hands, quiet kiss
On the mouth

And in my best behavior
I am really just like him
Look beneath the floorboards
For the secrets I have hid
