departure

With Jake, cake, shake & bake's departure, it marks the end of the gatherin season, as susan so aptly put it.
2 mths of intense sporadic gatherings, with badminton exercises, movie marathons, suppers, and shopping.
i don't think there will ever be another period as timely and quite like this.

with Jake gone, i was touted to be the onli one who will take care of the ladies if they're drunk. (thou i believe they can take care of themselves well enough) i'll be one of the remaining guys in a ladies environment.

friend, i will miss you. enjoy ya final year. instead of askin u to find an ang moh gf (cos LDR sucks), i'll ask u to cook safe and drink safe. play hard, yet work harder. say hi to the geese for me, and savour clean wide green pastures sans ah-nehs while u can. come back and "fill up the void".

i never really liked the airport. i never really liked sending people off either, because parting is, as Shakespeare so aptly put it, "such sweet sorrow." somehow within the infinite rows of check-in counters, clear glass panels, and an ironic attempt at making T3 look less like a concrete jungle with the green camou-netting, lies a sense of loneliness. i felt small in this infinite environment, with its endless aisles and high ceiling. everywhere i turn is a couple kissing goodbye, a family taking its final portrait, beloved friends sending a friend off, or excited couples on their next expedition. i haven set foot on a plane in a long time, and for a moment, i thought it a great privilege to fly.
i pondered if i can make this my working environment, being an air steward and travel the globe. i realise that i might never be able to live this kind of solitude; travel alone. i would be not alone, yet alone. this kind of alone that transcend beyond oceans and space, where one is not always a phone call or bus ride away. it's a paradox because i need to see the world. and perhaps i need to be distant in order to appreciate my life more objectively.

(Pong Nan) is one of my favourite singers. very talented. two of my fav songs (which i've posted b4, but i got so excited at the thought of listening to his new EP that i'm posting this again).

but how come 劉浩龍's version like, erm, better man. darn hahahah. anw the lyrics r fab. fits an emo kid like me. see below.

Repeat @
Repeat @

REPEAT*

Paul Newman passed away two days ago at 83.
he was probably most famous for being in BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID and THE COLOUR OF MONEY (opposite Tom Cruise).

"Paul Newman has passed away at 83. The 10-time Academy Award nominee, star of such classics as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and The Sting, won the Oscar in 1987 for his role in The Color of Money. He also was the recipient of two honorary statues.

The actor's career spanned six decades, including roles in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958), Cool Hand Luke (1967), and Fort Apache: the Bronx (1981). Newman retired from acting in 2007, saying he was no longer able to perform as well as he would like. His most recent work includes his supporting actor Oscar-nominated role in 2002's Road to Perdition, a Tony-winning turn in 2002's Broadway production of Our Town, an Emmy- and Golden Globe-earning performance in the 2005 miniseries Empire Falls, and voicing a character in 2006's Pixar animation feature Cars.

He leaves behind his wife, Oscar-winning actress Joanne Woodward, five children, two grandsons, and his older brother, Arthur."

so many actors have passed away this year. first there was Heath Ledger. then Bernie Mac and Sydney Pollack. now Paul Newman, a true screen legend. what a pity.

clubbin yesterday night was the most hiong i've been. i puked. nuff said.

Fright Night - 250908

Fright Night was a blast. what started as my dare to becca to watch ALIENS, alone in her room without closing her eyes, spun off into a horror movie marathon that includes some rare cameo appearances: Belle, Yien, QJ, Jenni, Susan, Huifen, Lionel, Bec, and me. it's probably one of our best marathons so far, as some of us revisited our (childhood) nightmares (Freddy Kreuger for me, and Emily Rose for Lionel, while others had their creativity tested and stimulated. What results was a highly professional event poster tt rivals those real posters u see in theatres.

credits and copyrights to Jennifer Law, who tweaked some details to make this facebook pic so real. hahahaha. and kudos to our poster boy QJ for pulling off such a, erm, gruesomely horrific face.

and then there was Jurassic Belle, whose appearance was so timely to our movie marathon and FB commenting that i thought this is the most hilarious piece of shit i've seen this week. ahhahahahahah. i literally LOL. bec, u're guilty of it also i know =) and you, you, you and you also!

classic.

so we watched 5 movies in all, with the last two being spillovers into the next afternoon and continued after brunch. there's

A Nightmare on Elm Street

The Grudge

The Exorcism Of Emily Rose

Psycho

Rosemary's Baby

i've realised that my last 6 posts or so were mainly pop culture related stuff, and like Yien said, "it's like some Mediacorp website." hahhahah. erm ok. but u know i cant blog abt a movie marathon without reviews!

i've conquered my fear of Freddy Kreuger. after watchin Johnny Depp being eaten up by his bed when i was a kid, i've always been tormented by this evil with knives for fingers, believing that he might be under my bed, together with aliens, and attack me in my dreams. hahhaha. despite the promising poster, and it being directed by Wes craven, the guy who rebooted the whole slasher-flick genre with the pioneering SCREAM, the movie was quite terrible and typically C-Grade horror with a clueless ending. the premise was good, but even Freddy looked a lil silly on hindsight now. thank god for Johnny Depp's first performance.

The Grudge is the english remake of the Jap hit Ju-On. despite being directed by the same guy, the movie was not scary la. perhaps the Scary Movie franchise jinxed the whole notion of a white-washed mother-son as a fearful wide-eyed duo and made them less scary by spoofing them. Sarah Michelle Gellar and Jason Behr was totally useless in the film la.

The Exorcism of Emily Rose was a sleeper-hit, in all sense of the word. it knocked out belle bec and qj, but for those who managed to stay on, it's a great movie. Laura Linney is always satisfaction guaranteed. the show verges close to being a courtroom drama, but important and significant flashbacks of the exorcism and possession, featuring a great Jennifer Carpenter (i think i got the name wrong), kept the movie gripping and exciting. sharp and smart, the bewitching hour of 3am was quite spooky enough to frighten Lionel again. =) hahahah. after this movie, we KO-ed before wakin up to good food downstairs.

PSYCHO was quite disappointing, despite being directed by Gus Van Sant, who did Good Will Hunting as well, it was not suspenful in the way i had imagined Hitchcock suspense to be. a thinner Vince Vaughn was not menacing enough, and the infamous shower scene was so-so. Julianne Moore and Viggo Mortensen were a pleasure to watch as always thou.

Rosemary's Baby. the classic that was more recognised as the movie with Mia Farrow's Vidal Sassoon-cut pixie hair, than for being a chilly satanic conspirarcy movie. Tyra Banks overused the words "Mia Farrow in Rosemary's Baby" on ANTM, during one of the seasons, when asking a hairstylist to give tt particular crop to a model. directed by Roman Polanski, the guy most famous to us for being the director of The Pianist and for having won an Oscar for tt movie but was unable to attend because he had fled the country on charges of child abuse or having sex with a minor i cant remember. it's a suspenseful movie, albeit long at times.

i need to get some sleep first. more updates later.

TINA FEY!!!

i love Tina Fey after watchin the first season of 30 ROCK, now one of my all time fav show(she also wrote the script for "Mean Girls"). if there's ANYONE i wld love to marry, it's her! she's the funniest woman in Hollywood now, and congrats to her latest sweep at the Emmys a few days ago. best comedy series, best comedy actress, some writing award, etc etc.

back in the days in SNL. note the spongebob joke.

Bitch is the new black

and some classic scenes from 30 ROCK, created by Tina.

"my sexuality"

"muffin top"

"The rural juror" is a movie the actress in the show starred in, but they keep mispronouncing the title. Jane Krakowski, most famous for starring in Ally McBeal, is comedy gem here, who always pronounced it as "the Wer-Jer".

a spoof on The View and Barbra Walters

and finally, 30 ROCK is nothing without Alec Baldwin. this is probably the scene tt got him his Best Comedy Actor win.

Mamma Mia!

Based on the smash musical of the same name, Mamma Mia! is the story of a 20 yr old girl who is getting married and doesnt know who her father is. One day, she found her mum's old diary and found three possible suspects who had "..." with her mother. not knowing which one's her father, she decided to invite all three to her wedding to find out.

Meryl oh Meryl, you know i am going to rave about her. this movie adds to her already spectacular body of work/resume. being the most-nominated actress in Oscar history, she can now add "singer" to her list. she barely has anything that she hasnt tried! comedy, check. political drama, check. tear jerker, check. adventure, check. horror? hmmmmm. that i dunno. this is not her first foray into singing. those who read this space sld recall an earlier post with her singing in A PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION, Robert Altman's final film. "Goodbye my mamma" was a tear-jerker. even earlier, she also sang a song on Postcards From the Edge as well.

oh but Meryl alone is enough reason to see any movie she's starred in, whether the movie is good or bad as a whole. Her extensive body language says more than any words, and that face encompasses more emotions than 10 Catherine Zeta-Jones combined and multiplied by infinity. in "the winner takes it all", thou a little exhaustive and the camera doesnt really know how to feature her well, she slouches and straightens, frowns and looks sad, and worked that scarf and wind to her effect. that moment i figured if Meryl werent the Best Living Actress on earth, she'd probably be Celine Dion's predecessor with those diva-like antics and theatricals. her voice is at once playful and excitable, but works best when tender. 'Slipping thru my finger" was so beautiful it almost brought tears to my eyes. However, when put beside her two "dynamos", Meryl seemed to have aged not as gracefully. the wrinkles, white-washed face, worn-down features make her dowdy, but i guess therein lies the charm of a woman. those wrinkles make her look like a living person amongst us and adds to the realism and makes her approachable. no one needs to look like Nicole Kidman all the time. who needs a facelift anyway when she's got the talents. its living proof that it is not all it takes to succeed and have a long-lasting career in Hollywood. Meryl dancing on the bed to "Dancing Queen", that opening of divine sisterhood on the pier, the amazing amazing rolls and flips she does that seem almost acrobatic in "Mamma Mia!", and that hilarious duet with Pierce Brosnan on "SOS", this proves to be Meryl at her most bubbly and daring in a long time.

Speaking of sisterhood, the BEST thing about the movie is Julie Walters and Christine Baranski. playing Meryl's backup singers, these two thespians STOLE THE WHOLE SHOW. every scene they're in is HILARIOUS. heck even when they work alone, their dynamite performances were always entertaining and delectable to watch. sometimes i even think they're better than Meryl in certain scenes. they're the reason enough as well to just catch the film.

Newcomer Amanda Seyfried did a credible job, pierce brosnan's singing voice sounds funnily deep, Colin Firth is Brit wit, the "titanic" scene was hilarious and so were many other scenes that were memorable. it was interesting to note during the credit that Tom Hanks and wife Rita Wilson were the executive producers of the movie. Coming out of the success of Hairspray, which demonstrated that the musical genre can still make money, Mamma Mia! is a film seemingly for the mid-life women, yet has all the fun for the family. Abba is arguably the best thing to come out of Sweden. their body of work is the epitome of feel-good dance music. The Greece scenaries were fantastic. the turqoise walls and the floral outfits and set was bohemian and exuberant. though the opening scene didnt prove to be as impactful and unforgettable as Nikki Blonsky's terrific Good Morning Baltimore, the film was a psychedelic mix of good music, laughter, and fun. Though at times certain scenes look badly edited and without a smooth flow and elegance, the stellar cast and music were enough to make u look past it and have a great 103mins. use that to drive away the monday blues.

in the end a girl's journey of self-discovery proved to be more than, and everything she's asked for.

some time ago i was looking for Meryl and Lily Tomlin's Oscar presentation of the Honoree Oscar to Robert Altman, but couldnt. this vid demonstrates Robert Altman's style (overlappin dialogue) and their incredible ability to follow the script. probably one of the best piece of presentation in recent Oscar history for me. sadly the vid cant be embedded.

Wall.E? E-VA.

Some people consider Pixar animations as morality tales, and it dates back to the heydays oF Disney animations which had a large young following. From Toy Story's friendship, A Bug's Life's belief in self to make changes, to The Incredible's family values, Pixar's animations have proved to be more than just state-of-the-art digital animation that gradually becomes more and more close to life. And Wall.E's duality tale of romantic love and fearful consumerism will go down as one of its more timely, and timeless classic.

The first 30mins of the movie played like a classic. Close to no dialogue, its images and sounds are the only things that propelled the story forward. yet so much was said within that 30mins. great story tellers like Spielberg made ET inaudible, yet understandable and identifiable, and this is what Wall.E has achieved. though the first 30 mins rivaled The Incredibles at its elegant story-telling best, the rest of the film succumbed to a mad-cap adventure in deep space, just like Finding Nemo's underwater adventure, except this time, Wall.E is finding Eve, and Eve is finding a plant. Each Pixar movie creates a realm. from the life of toys to bugs, underwater life to unsung superheroes, Paris cuisine delights, and racing cars of Western country charm, Wall.E adds to the list of conquered settings with a bleak glance into a dystopic Earth some 700 years later. animations always have its class of sidekicks. like supporting actors, they sometimes steal a huge portion of the show. Pixar's realms are so fulfilled and realised that you cant help but marvel at the thoughts, and most importantly, passion, that went into creating this realm. the amazing details to which this world is created is marvelous, and hats-up to their never-ending list of wonderful ideas.

time spent on Earth was the best. i especially love the use of oldies music. set against bleak images of a toxic-laden earth piled skyscraper-high with litter, the smart juxtaposition takes away the heavy tone but added delight and fluff into it.its like, a perfect world contrasted with a savage wasteland. Wall.E seemed to be perfectly enjoying what it is doin, compartmentalising every finding and creating its own unique world. from the distinct voice of Louis Armstrong singing La Vie En Rose, one of the most romantic number of all time, to Babs serenading in the classic Hello Dolly!, the songs not only gave the movie an old school charm to a time and period of perfection(slightly utopian), it also perfected the romanticism between Wall.E and Eve. i knew that it was going to be a sweet movie. sweet is an udnerstatement. but i never expected it to be so romantic. the notions of love were simple: surprising her, build something for her, show her things she's never seen, give her presents. these innocent gestures make these machines so human, yet at the same time mock our modern state of supposed romanticism. it reminded me that love can be simple. and sometimes, it's the most simple of things that touches us most: the holding of hands, the tilting of heads. and how apt to have it called Eve. innocent notions of first love aside, (spoiler alert) the final scene, when Eve and Wall.E brought the humans back to Earth again was a very smart allergory that referenced Adam and Eve as the first couple that kicked off life. how apt.

The whole movie played like a duality of opposing ideas, juxtapositions, and themes: old music set to modern consumerism, earth vs space, robots vs humans, life vs consumerism, modern love vs innocent love, human love vs machine love, brown vs colour, etc etc. and then there is the proof that cockroaches will outlive humans. hahahahahahaha.

7 or so yrs ago it was believed that Dreamworks animation may rival Pixar. they were their closest rival and it was a tough call. remember when A Bug's Life and ANTZ came out on the same year and there were comparisons? remember when Finding Nemo spurred the series of animals-related movie, which led to Madagascar and a string of others having the same trying-to-escape-current-predicament-or-state-of-entrapment-movies-like-open-season-and-over-the-hedge? now it seems that the disparity has become so huge that Dreamworks ever achieving the kind of artistic success becomes a dream. even their best work to date, Kungfu Panda IMO provided the laughs but rarely the heart and elegance. at a time when Pixar animations no longer use famous celebrity names for their voice-over roles, other animations are still shamelessly using that as a promotional tool, wasting money on these jobs that can be spent on improving the quality of film. i mean, who would bother if Jackie Chan voiced a monkey with less than 10 lines, much less watch a movie to hear him say less than 10 lines of unfunny script?! its puzzling!

and so what if Shrek is the highest grossing animation of all time (i think)? do we really think it's as good as the first one? heck, do we even think it's as good as ANY Pixar animation at all?!

the amount of dedication, hardwork, thought, and most importantly, passion put into each Pixar animation is amazing and evident. From each opening short film down to the very last line, heck, last few seconds AFTER the credits have roled, Wall.E was a delight to watch. about 10 of us movie goers stayed behind to finish the credits just now, and delighted in a split second fake advertising of BNL, the consumerism corporation in the film. the credits were littered with animation and an "afterwards" to how they rebuild Earth. sure, it's not without its flaws. i hated seeing the 2-dimensional portrayal of humans, but i guessed its only to prove a point. and you might as well be poignant, i mean, who's to say 700 yrs later we wont be a stupid bunch of beings? and there's also the hyperactive pacing of the space sequence that sorta missed the heartfelt moments. i knew i was gonna cry. and i did tear towards the end. yea, robots made me cry. and i salute the passion put into every detail. (did u notice EVE's name carved on its body when it first appeared?)

nuff said. boycott Madagascar 2. why should you compromise?

Ryan Adams & The Cardinals

I've been listening to Easy Tiger today, and i just love this album.

Ryan Adams is a singer/songwriter who sounds like a less whiney, less atas Rufus Wainwright (whose vocal stylings make me irritated sometimes), with an occasional tinge of U2 Bono nasal. his style is soft rock with a tinge of occasional Nashville-rock coupled with folk. always suitable for a good cry-out after a breakup. i read somewhere that he takes drugs. why are all druggies so darn talented?!

i think the electric guitar has never sounded more tragic.

i love this song "Two" from Easy Tiger. the album's backing vocals were more lush than this version, and features the lovely Sheryl Crow if i'm not wrong. i love the twists in this song.

"Everybody Knows"

Dear John. pity the version with Norah Jones aint of gd quality.

When The Stars Go Blue. i first heard this on One Tree Hill. didnt know he's the original singer. Blake Lewis did a cover during his stint on AI as well.

not everyone can cover an Oasis classic and make it sound utterly original. Wonderwall.

age-ism

when i was younger, i felt like i was trying to chase time. but now, i feel like time is chasing after me.

when younger, we're always caught up with school work and CCA. Time becomes elusive when u want to squeeze in some to catch your favourite tv shows, or read that much-awaited book. more often than not, i managed to "catch" time at the expense of my sch work, always succumbing to tv.

Nowadays, it seems that time is tryin to catch me. each yr, as i see the number accumulate and dread being labelled "mid /late 20s", i feel like time is coming up to me from the back and takin a stab at me. i dread the tell-tale signs on my face that will reveal my age when someone promptly ask about it. i feel like there is not enough time to complete everything that i want to do. those driving lessons, those music lessons, those personal goals and discipline, seem to flee as fast as age is catching up.

such a love-hate relationship.

will i die?

"he's one of those who'd read Literature and commit suicide." - nerd, as quoted from qj

hmmmmmmmm. i will? hahaha. i laughed when i heard tt. it's not entirely implausible. but tt's gotta be some shittily fantastically bombastically awesome book for me to feel this way hahahahaha.

i'm not that emo la, and i'm not suicidal. thou it's cool to be associated with Woolfe-Plath-assorted-suicidal-writers, i prob have to achieve greatness before i can die without regret.

random.

if screaming could demonstrate my sense of excitement better than any word, picture, handsign, or action, i would scream till my throat goes sore at the thought of going to Sandy Lam's Oct 18 concert. i really really feel like screamin just to release some of my accumulating and pent-up exhilaration. just thinking about how her previous concert was one of the best nights of that year is reason enough.

i think everyone should catch a Sandy Lam concert at least once in their life.(same goes for a Faye Wong concert) u'd prob be able to sing along to 50% of her songs. in recent years, none of her concert is ever the same anywhere (except for mayb one or two outfits), and she always try to change her choreography and track listing according to diff country's preference. which singer nowadays can sing and dance so well in the chinese music industry (without resorting to some form of gimmick)?! not many. good things must share, and it's such a pity that no one i know shares the remote passion(s) i have. sigh.

I AM GETTING MY TICKETS SOON! LAST CALL TO ANYONE INTERESTED?!!?!?

change

i find it sad that someone has to change himself/herself in order to suit a boyfriend/girlfriend. i am not a believer. gradually, and in recent yrs, i've come to believe that i do not have to be whatever u want or do not want me to be. i live by my own standards. i lead a life answerable only to myself.

the name of my blog says it all.

i dun believe i am being selfish in saying that i lead a life that is "answerable only to myself." i know how at times, actions create repercussions in others lives. like how buyin that last piece of chocolate bar denies someone else of it. like how my parents will be sad if i pass away, touchwood, or met with an accident. like how an act of betrayal creates hurt for the third party. i guess what i am sayin is, i do not have to conform to others' standards, not making other people miserable as a result. but i do think that satisfyin myself, and making that a life mission to be happy, is selfish in a very faint, yet puzzling way.

k, i hope i am making sense again.

change is not necessarily bad, if u're changing for the better.everybody's changing, everything's changing. so why do we need to stay the same? but change for yaself, not for others. have dignity and morals, without regrets nor guilt.

Robin Guthrie /Elizabeth Fraser /Simon Raymonde
