Sincerity

what is "friendship"?
it eludes me with each passing year, as our perception changes with increasing age.
i've come to realise it's not the number of years we've known each other.
it's also not the close proximity of our homes.
it's not even that someone to whom i can talk endlessly with.
friends are those who supports me in what i set out to do.
friends are those who accept me for my flaws, and for who i am.
friends are those who trust me with their secrets.
friends are those whom i can entrust my secrets upon, wholeheartedly.
friends are those who bothers to keep in touch with me.

with that,
thanks to my batch mates from the prom committee from the last 2 yrs, for standing by me and sacrificing their time and efforts in the name of friendship on top of love for CSS.
thanks to Shawn for always making me laugh in the toughest time, and for always tryin to be the bigger person by doing what pleases everyone. like act high at ktv when everyone is half dead. i can never do the larger-than-life things u do. and for cam-whoring with me.
thanks to PJ for the talks, the debates, and for listening to my ramblings.
thanks to bitch, for always askin me out to catch up, askin me to learn bike (which i flew kite and electric guitar, etc etc. u encourage my self-improvement streak.
thanks to becca for being the most enthusiastic person in the crowd without fail, and for takin so many muse-worthy pics of me, and for trying to be the most understanding person.
thanks to aiwei, whom i love for the brutal honesty, and for the trust. i know i can always count on u for honesty =)
thanks to zif, for taking care of me in sch and keeping in touch.
thanks to quin, my movie buddy, and shu, one of the coolest frens i know.

hahahahah i must be emo to write such a political entry. half these ppl wont even read, but i just wana say thank you to them. u make me feel at home. of course there's a bit more, but shall leave them to next time.

Happy Birthday "Susan" Tan Jiing Shyuan!

i was reading a few essays by the kids i tuition, and cant help but laughing at some of the stuff they wrote. here's the best one.

on whether it is unethical to use animals for tests, and if it should be outlawed, one wrote:

"However, without doing all these things, humans would hardly advance and be forever stuck in this current abyss."

this line turned out to be ironic, and funny. =)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY SHYUAN!!
(one of the rare times i use your real name hahahha)

i never knew that listening to 蔡琴 in a cafe can be such a relaxing experience. i went in feeling damn tired, carryin a heavy laptop, jacket, big file, and all. but i was awaken by the music. her voice is like smooth milk on a thirsty night, effortlessly encompasses so much emotions that never fails to make me feel melancholic and pensive.

i was happy today, surprised by an act of kindness, until my bitter mum showed me face yet again. sigh. what goes around comes around.

The Romantic Movement

"The distinction was a reminder of two models of desire; on the one hand, the autonomous decision that 'I like this restaurant because the food tastes good to me,' and on the other, the imitative thought that 'This restaurant must be good because everyone I know thinks it so.'

In the former case, a direct line linked desire to the object.
In the latter example, desire was first filtered through intermediary channels, the review pages of the newspapers or the mouths of the celebrated."
- from The Romantic Movement by Alain de Botton

I finally got down to reading this book. (Seems like i always use "finally got down to" when it comes to books. so much to read yet so little chance and time)this is one of the most entertainin books i've read in recent time. I remember Paul Chow giving us extracts from Kiss and Tell back in JC days, and Mr de Botton's words were so succint yet deep in its psychological analysis and references. This book chronicles a couple's relationship, from singleton to hooking up and so on, with intermitten references to art, philosophy and pop culture.

mee fen poster boy

"u're back in sch for wat?"
"oh, prom."
"AGAIN?!"

That's the usual response I get when I tell people that i am still involved in my sec sec prom. i've been getting this response for the past 3 years that i've been doing this, but somehow, recently, the same response that has been given felt like a sting more than anything. in the past, i would be proud and treat it as if it's nothing wrong or ashamed or shy about. now, i'm not so sure if it's the workload, whether i'm not the chairperson so my supposed responsibility to feel proud is gone, or that it has become a chore that got me feeling this way.

this year, i am also involved in jjc's prom. i agreed initially not knowing that it will consume me. i've since been tasked with an important role, and moving things along with the juniors seem like climbing a very steep mountain. towards JJC, it's not about a passion or a sense of loyalty to the school. i treat my job as a nurturing role for the juniors to guide them along. i see potential in them, but yet it gets tiring trying to inspire them, motivate them, or even get them to do things with their busy schedule. i'm also stuck in a position which warrents me no authority over them. personally, that is my challenge.

my passion of course still lies in CSS. this year i am not heading the committee, but still hanging around to help out just in case. there's many new faces, which is a paradox. we've always wanted new blood. but then i get worried that they might not be up to the challenge. therefore, that is, unknowingly, a challenge i have seemingly undertaken silently.

well, one of the plus points of going back to JJC is eating the mee fen, which is still selling at $0.80 / $1. but tt's not the main point. it's still delicious la.

anyway, i've got a new tagboard. i've kinda been wanting to know who is reading. so do tag along.

I havent been feeling very well recently. My piece of mind is not at ease. Last week I thought my mind will be cleared once I finish my overdue assignment. In fact, I have the same thought everytime. But seems like my mind likes to play tricky brain games with me. It's just a front, a state of mind, to get my lazy ass out and about to finishing my assignment.

my personal promise to myself, without making myself seem like a fool if i do not get to fulfill this, is to do a Masters degree overseas. Recently I've been thinking about this alot. I think I need the exposure, the experience, and the chance to get away. Of course, I also need the cash. Everything aside, this shall be a personal goal.

I've also promised myself to be a better writer. I need to be good at what I do, and currently I am disgusted at the state of my language. Language is power. No, I do not desire the capability to power up a lighthouse. I just need to feel assertive and confident about myself.

But this comes with the pithole of being an intellectual snub.

raging against pitholes, raging against the heart of darkness. we're all sane, but arent we all insane in our own ways?

I need to stop reading Batman comics. hahahahahahah.

sigh

Beach / 棋子

I went to the beach again. The last time I stepped foot on sand and volleyball was in 2004 or so, and it's been such a long time. I still do not have a huge fancy for it. But I don't hate it. It's a love-hate relationship I guess.

Bec chingy jac yien yuxian james OXT were there. it felt more like a picnic initially, with delicious salmon in mayo, and my self-made egg mayo.

after which we went to sing ktv, + sheena, - OXT and James. we 'Healed the world' again towards the end, and I played Barbra in 'tell him' with yien. hahahahaa. it was hilarious. i also got emotional durin 'Eyes on Me'.

i realise i like to sing Carly Simon's 'you're so vain' when someone does something that i disapprove of. i need to get it off me before it consumes me. i've been at this for too long. far too long. so where's my sense of dignity after all these while. i need closure. and permanent memory loss.

you know . . .

you know life sucks when. . .

1) u're reading about other people's holidays through their blog and knowing u'd NEVER get to enjoy that kind of luxury.

2) u're sleepin at 4am.

3) u're not exercising but getting fat

4) u haven start that assignment that is due tomorrow

5) u det annoyed at anything everyone does

6) u feel alone, not dignified

7) u're blogging about how life sucks.

i use to think that as long as i am happy, life would be good enough. i will have nothing to worry about as long as what i do makes me happy. as long as it gives me satisfaction. as long as it doesnt "hurt" anyone in the meantime. I've grown to learn that it's not enough just being happy. It's a very selfish thought. who's to define "hurt" if what makes u happy makes someone worse off? what if grabbing that favourite candy of yours denies another kid who is crying of having it?

now, that's a bad example, but the point is there. while we cant foresee the future and make amends for that crying kid, within our means we can prevent hurt to others around us. intentional hurt in the name of happiness is never fair.

i'm beginning to hate ramblin epiphanies like these.

my JAM-ming session

i was at Jam 蕭敬騰's autograph session this afternoon. I wasnt a big fan, but now I'm a newly converted 蕭幫 (no la I didnt join the fanclub of the same name). Initially I thought his album was the worst out of the 3 who came out of the singing competition. Aska's album, the first to be released, was packed with so many souvenir, and the album had a clear music and artistic concept. Sadly, as much as his live performance was up to standards, his controversies since his debut marred his success. In person, Aska felt fake and contrived, right down to the words he use. He stopped a song 3 times during the intro, a few lines into the verse, claiming that he was not in the mood yet. I suspect it was just a case of forgetting the lyrics and needing 3 times to remind himself. It seems he does that often.

However, it should primarily be about the music. I bought the album nonetheless because there's some great songs in there.

Yoga 林宥嘉's album was my favourite out of the 3. It was an eclectic mix of genres befitting of the reputation "the-kid-who-sang-ulu-songs" he garnered during the competition, which eventually led him to the crown. He made famous a few old and unknown songs during the competition. But what I love best about the album was how well produced it was. Yoga had an active role in the production, in writing, and in backing vocals. the artistic concept of the album was cohesive and fresh, relevant to the album name "mystery". His live performance was not always steady, but there's a raw energy in his performance unmarked by typical industry vocal coaching or singing postures. it was a very freestyle way of performing, and he's witty to boot.

I didnt like 蕭敬騰's album initially. Lee Wei Song and his brothers didnt do him justice. He had no parts in the background vocals, the songs were catchy but incohesive. there wasnt a very clear sense of style and the way with which he was going (perhaps that can be counted as "one way" as well). It leaned slightly to the rock side, but there werent enough rock songs there to cement his style. There were minor flaws (like how he seemed to be spitting at one point, his diction wasnt clear, which made him seem unsure of what he was singing), but the biggest was how badly the album was packaged. both from Warner Music, Aska's debut had tons of freebies like a calendar and a photo book to attract fans. but for Jam's, there were none! just 11 songs and one album. the album design looks cheap and without focus. The only saving grace, therefore, was his voice.

Thankfully, the second version was a superb edition with a bonus concert dvd and live CD! AND the cover looked stunning.

But of cos, I was won over by his live performance. It was even better than listening to the album! he had such concern over the way he sings that you rarely see him with his eyes open, nor move beyond 10 steps on stage. the times he werent talkin seemed to be an energy-conserving method that was released during his electrifying songs, most examplified by 王子的新衣, my favourite from the album. LOVE.
(he lowered the key a lil thou. pity). but the best part was his handshake. he gave everyone a SUPER FIRM handshake that lasted even after i loosen my grip, and he'd look at you personally and say thanks. now, not everyone has a firm handshake, and his was definitely an appreciative one. you can tell. when he thanked people, he would do a 90degree bow like a Japanese. another thing i like was how frank he was. he reminded me of faye Wong, whose answers always made the reporter or host look stupid for having ask such a qns. for eg:

yes 933fm DJ peifen: so u're learning the guitar?
Jam: yup
peifen: are u learning to write songs on ya guitar?
jam: yup
peifen: so what have u written with ya guitar?
jam: erm, songs?

*crowd breaks into laughter.
not verbatim, but tt's roughly how it went.

I was at the autograph session with Ash and her sista, who was a fan. quite a bit of hilarious stuff happened today, despite the drizzle.

this auntie over here is seen taking a picture of Jam, and the personal is holding something similar to a red packet. For those who've been to autograph sessions, you should know the strictly-no-cameras on stage policy, but this auntie just kept snapping despite the personels warning and pulling her away! on her left, not included in this pic, was another auntie (her friend), tryin desperate to take a pic WITH Jam. The ang pow was given by this second auntie.

We were very very lucky to see Wayne fr Warner music at the session, and he gave us VIP tickets to the Dragonfly showcase! WOOTS! i was worried that i couldnt enter in slippers and berms, and was all ready to purchase one even if i have to. turns out we can enter! and over at Dragonfly, we met the 2 aunties again!

this was the second auntie. apparently, SHE'S THE MOTHER OF THE FIRST AUNTIE AND SHE IS 70 YRS OLD. we were sitting at one side waiting for our ticket to arrive, when she walked over and i very shamelessly asked her questions about her stage stint. she told me she's a Singaporean married to a Taiwanese. she gave Jam perfume and just wanted to take a photo, but they didnt allow. she said "lian2 lao3 ren2 dou1 bu2 fang4 guo4!", which means "even old ladies also cannot be lenient". she didnt mention about the ang pow, so i asked her: "auntie, how much was in the angpow?!"
Ash called my name by the side, seeming disturbed at my audacity to ask such a qns hahahaha. the auntie was surprised i saw it, and ask me to guess how much. hahah. here's wat we said:
Auntie: "only one piece"
me: "50bucks?"
auntie: where got so little?
me: u give Taiwan dollar of SGD?
auntie: $100
me: 100 SGD?
auntie: ya
me: give him SGD for wat? he go Taiwan how to spend?
auntie: -

then auntie began to ramble about how she was in front of the queue at KENJI WU's DRAGONFLY showcase (she was there!), and how it's her 40 yr old daughter who wanted to watch instead of her. the rest of the time she was complaining about the long Q and blaming her daughter for askin her to come ("ask u dun come liao u still come"), which i thought was a saving face tactic hahahahahah. but anw, it was hilarious. =)

recently i've been seeing hip aunties everywhere. the most coolest one was Auntie Catherine who was at St James when we went there and she was dancing on stage with a bunch of young women. becca and xinyi even when to join her. uber cool =)

i dont think at that age i would be half as cool and easy with myself. it takes guts man. and i salute these aunties for not succumbing to social stereotypes of how they should be. aunties who break the supposed rules should have no fear, but be proud of what they're doing. there's really no limits.

but if i were to go dancing on stage at 60, ppl will just think i am a lecher la.hahaha!

I was lucky, yet unlucky enough to be in the VIP session. that area was filled with ppl fr SINGTEL, the organisers for this event. they were there just to be there. these peeps werent even fans and they're just standing there blocking my view. i was standing in between 2 women, one of which just arrive. Yellow started talkin to Black, with me in between. so i kindly moved a step back thinking they just have a few lines to say to each other and i can have my spot back. the next thing i know Yellow bitch moved into my spot and just stood right in front of me, leaving me to smell her hair. i was fumin at these corporate bitches who cant even sing a line of his songs, yet was talkin and sms-ing nonstop even when he is singing, saying nonsense stuff like "i dun mind even if he is 21 yrs old", then break into laughter. WA LAU. cannot stand it. i know i sound damn mean, but i dun like corporate bitches like these la. they ruin the image of supposed smart intelligent women who have more in mind than just making money and looking pretty in corporate wear. they come close to being an ugly Singaporean, go there see see onli. everytime the people on stage play some games, surely one person would ask : what prize ah? and someone wld reply "phone lor, from us". without fail! have some dignity man.

anw the showcase was great la. pity my cam sucks. 90% of the people can see his mole with their camera, and can record his performances from 1st to 100th song. my camera can onli see the metal pole la. sad. my eyes can see better la but nvm.

JAMMING RULES!

Sesame Street

I am sure I am not the only one who havent watch Sesame Street in years. The last time I caught an episode was probably when my mum was still a babysitter a few years back. I would force the kids to watch Sesame Street but they have short attention span and more often than not are always more interested in other shows. hahaa.

While reading EW I found out that Elmo actually dueted with Alicia Keys, Chris Brown, and even Andrea Bocelli! So while youtubing, these two caught my attention.

Norah Jones' version of "Dont know 'Y'"
this is quite funny and sweet. hahhaa.

and on Aug 11 2008, the episode will feature FEIST!! singing, wat else, but 1234.
this is a sneak peak and it's quite funny as well.

both vids may be deemed 'lame' by adults, but they're actually very sweet and innocent. if it doesnt put just a tiny smile on ya face, u're prob in danger of being too serious. lighten up. =)

Fear

"and you know the thing about chaos; it's fear."

"Madness is like gravity. All you need is a little push."

I caught The Dark Kinght for a second time today with xin, jenni, belle, and QJ(whom also caught it with me the first time round). I never go to the same movie for more than once. The last time, and first ever, I did so, if I remember correctly, was for Titanic. I cant remember if I caught the first time on dvd or in the theatres, but the fact was I sat through the 3 hr weeper twice, and both times my eyes got watery.

I read this forum a few weeks back, and they were polling if they would go see the Dark Knight tiwce, or more, and asked what were the movies that kept them going back to theatres. pirates 3, spiderman 3, titanic, star wars 1 thru 6, LOTR, etc etc. I thought to myself that I oughta show some love for the movie and pay Heath Ledger my last respects. This is the least a fan could do for a great performance, and second time round is still great.

I caught up on the missed dialogue from the first screenin. GV VIVO's 10 row theatre 2 has a boomin sound system that at times felt a tad too loud, but the screen was right in my face, widespread. I could hear every moan and groan and even noise that was comin out of the movie set's next door, and feel att the vibrations in my jeans and seat. Second time round was more of an appreciation for the script, though the action sequences, acting, and special effects also left me at awe again. Some scare tactics still got to me, even though i knew it was gonna happen. I could marvel at the Hans Zimmer score better now, and cringe everytime Heath rows his eyes or lick his lips. The movie also felt more well-paced, as the first time was quite hectic (i thought some parts were a tad choppy though).

The Dark Knight is still the number 1 film in the US, with a current to-date domestic box office gross of approx $400 million. Staying at number 1 for 3 consecutive weeks (even keepin Mummy 3 at number 2)and breakin all sorts of records with its opening weekend/2-day gross or whatever drew speculations that it will surpass the $600 million domestic gross by all-time top grosser Titanic.well, at least come close. Titanic was a slow-burn that stayed at number 1 for 15 straight weeks, fueled by the Oscars, leo leo leo, word-of-mouth, etc etc. the other camp suspects that while Dark Knight might come close, it will never surpass the legendary run that Titanic achieved, or even come close. They speculate that it will only create s string of imitations, of comic-adaptations that are darker, more ambitious, and more daring.

But really. what keeps people goin back is just the very basic fact that it's a great movie. Ong Sor Fen should be shot for giving it a half-star short of 4. i hate reviewers who give a 5-star rating. that almost always comes with biasness. mayb my rating scale is too stuck on Rolling Stone's rating scale, whereby a 5-star is deemed a Classic, a 4-star Excellent. The Dark Knight definitely deserved more than the 3.5 that it got. that's like callin the Beatles average!

more Death Cab

Most people probably got to know of Death Cab for Cutie through this song, which is being played on local radio stations. Listen to the lyrics, because this is a tragic song about death and friendship.

I Will Follow You Into the Dark

For me, I discovered DCFC after listening to the Grammy Nominees 2006 or 2007 album. They were nominated for Best Alternative album for "Plans", and "Soul Meets Body" was the song in the compilation. I know i know, not exactly the most indie-cool way to discover an indie band, but good music is good music, whatever your means of attainin it. what matters is your appreciation and support for it. I remember hearing this song like a breath of fresh air in that entire album; so haunting and so poetic. i got the album soon after and it didnt disappoint. i was a fan from then on. this song remains one of my all-time favourites, along with Fiona Apple's "Across the Universe" and Bjork's "Joga".

Soul Meets Body
"a melody softly soaring through my atmosphere"

funny

watchin Ms South Carolina's vid alone seemed. . . scary. In a way it is equally tragic that someone could speak so badly. After reading the works of a 12yr old a few days back, and seeing this again after being reminded, i fear for the standard of English for Americans.

Not that my standards are high either.

Anyways, watching Jimmy Kimmel disect her speech was hilarious. it brought a whole new perpective to the "huh?!?!? what?!?!" video. hahaha.

I Will Possess Your Heart

Death Cab For Cutie - I Will Possess Your Heart

how i wish you could see the potential
the potential of you and me
it's like a book elegantly bound
but in a language that you can't read just yet
you gotta spend some time love, you gotta spend some time with me
and i know that you'll find love, i will possess your heart

there are days when outside your window,
i see my reflection as i slowly pass
and i long for this mirrored perspective,
when we'll be lovers, lovers at last
you gotta spend some time love, you gotta spend some time with me
and i know that you'll find love, i will possess your heart

i will possess your heart
i will possess your heart

you reject my advances and desperate pleas
i won't let you, let me down so easily, so easily

you gotta spend some time love, you gotta spend some time with me
and i know that you'll find love, i will possess your heart

i will possess your heart
i will possess your heart
i will possess your heart

Convocations!

I attended two good friends' convocation last weekend. It was my first ever and it was a whirwind of cam-whoring and more. Budding photographers Becca Bee Fuying Lixin Jenni all had their cameras armed and loaded, with the exception of mine. Perhaps I've gotten over the need to document events with my small camera, since so many others are doing it. I'm waiting for the day I get my hands on a DSLR to snap the world away again. One thing that doesnt change though is my camera's short battery life. It stopped prematurely on the second day after a mere 6 photos. damn.

Somehow it was so much fun I found myself laughing alot that day. I think I am lightening up again, which is a good sign even though my lame streak has resurfaced. ha!

Congrats to Lixin and TallOne! frens forever!

A pair of 12 year old Aussie twins wrote the following. This is an excerpt from an article they wrote. To be able to write so well at such a tender age. Makes me wonder what's the difference between them and our local kids.

"We are rapidly becoming a "checkout community". "How are you today?" we ask, but there is no eye contact and we don't really care.We all have the daily grind of going to school or work, but that's not really living, is it? You may as well just sit and wait for your coffin to be delivered.

If you want to add value to your life, you have to put the effort in.

So read the local paper and see what you can join, chat to someone at the shops and invite them round for tea, get together with neighbours and clean up a park, and shape the future by being a living, breathing example to them."

The Dark Knight

I got really excited when I saw this poster at Lido while watchin "I'm Not There" earlier this year. This poster is so well crafted it directs all your attention to the Joker. The blown up version does it more justice.

I FINALLY caught The Dark Knight, after my plans were twarted on Friday when the tickets were sold out 2hours before the 8pm show I wanted to watch at The Cathay. This time, I was determined to catch it. I booked the tickets two days earlier, chose the superb Grand Cathay that has a huge screen, fantastic sound, ample leg space, and comfortable seats. Touting it as the most anticipated movie of 2008 was no exaggeration, with all the posthumous Oscar-or-not hype surrounding late Heath Ledger's performance. The entire marketing campaign was based on it. It delivered, and I must say the last time I was SO excited to see a performance, or a movie, was . . . Cate Blanchett in I'm Not There or Meryl in Devil Wears Prada. Or Ryan Gosling in Half Nelson.

At a whopping 153 minutes, I was amazed at how each and every single minute felt like a punch. Every scene played like the Joker's twisted and complicated mind, with action, laughs, cringes, complicated and smart crime acts, and intellect spewing at every turn. Christopher Nolan, of Momento fame, might have packed too much details and too many themes into the movie. It is the most psychologically twisted of the Batman series, with the deepest quest into the whole moral foreplay. Did the Joker spawn from the Dark Knight's crime fighting, insomuch as the clearing up leads to villains of another level? At one of the movie's climatic scene, two ships are loaded with explosives, one carrying the scums and criminals, one carrying the citizens. They have to choose between blowing the other ship up, or risk both ships exploding if neither party detonates the other ship in the given time. Is it right to kill to protect oneself? Are the criminals not humans as well?

The whole movie played with post-911 terrorist resonance, with the blowing up of the entire Gotham Hospital the final straw. It felt terrifyingly realistic with what was going on a few years back, and the evacuation of citizens felt apocalyptical, almost as if watching a horror movie with a virus ala 28 WEEKS LATER. This is the most grim and anarchist of the entire series, and a little heavy for a Summer blockbuster, but I'm glad Chris Nolan made no compromise. The script was full of punch. The cinematography was befitting with a grim dark-blue throughout. And of course the Bat Pod thingie, which was so much cooler than anything Iron Man had, on hindsight.

Christian Bale as Batman was the perfect choice, and he's carved out a career as diverse as Edward Norton's, and he's one of the best character actors around. Thou without as much screen time without the Bat suit as compared to Batman Begins, he still managed to do a rather decent job. Batman Begins was his breakout role to the world, in a way his first major blockbuster. The Dark Knight extends upon his talent, though I wished he had more screen time outside the suit.

I was glad to see Cillian Murphy return with a minor role as the Scarecrow. CM is so hugely underrated which puzzles me because he's had a diverse filmography and decent acting as well. And then there were Chin Han, and Edison's non-existent, less than 3sec shot. Heck the camera didnt even focus on him. Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman were scene-stealers with great lines, and Maggie Gyllenhael was stunning. I wished she was cast in the first movie instead of Katie Holmes. She added a little edge and exotic beauty to the role of Rachel Dawes.

Aaron Eckhart as Harvey Dent was good, but it didnt scream at me. Those who've seen Thank You For Smoking should remember his PR role in that movie, that in a way paved for this role. But that movie was line-dependent. To play a good-turn-bad role required more than good lines. I thought he could have been more menacing, and his voice could have been lower. Perhaps I watch too much of the cartoon.

And then there was Heath Ledger. The licking of lips. The low tone in his voice. That laughter. That slouch and tousled green hair. That white-red makeup and the ghastly black rings that accentuated his eyes. Heath is a Method actor, being compared to the great Marlon Brando. In Brokeback Mountain, he tightened his jaw throughout the entire shoot just to show Ennis' pent-up frustrations. In this movie, he got so into the role that rumours claim it was the cause of his drug overdose that led to his eventual demise. Like watching James Dean in any movies of his short-career, the Joker was Heath at his prime, with a performance that resonates even after I left the theatre. The sense of poignance at the loss of great potential is truely tragic. To say that he left at his prime is undermining what he could have done in the future. If he were still alive today, I am sure he will go on to give even more stunning performances. The Joker was the heart of the movie, as it should be, and Heath stole the movie. At times funny and scary, he created a Joker of his own. You can almost see the deep characterisation that went into this role. He has proven that to touch anything Jack Nicholson has done before might not be suicide after all. JN's Joker was a lighter villain with more Tim Burton fluff, but HL's was menacing and deeply troubled, yet not without any "jokes".

This goes down as one of my favourite movies of all time. CN has successfully brought Batman down from the unrealistic, it-could-only-happen-in-the-movies-or-comics realm into real life. While watching the movie I felt that someone like the Joker could truely exist. Perhaps it might not force out a crime-fighting caped crusader masked in a lathex suit moulded after a bat. But with all the signs pointing to an apocalyptic future, it is not hard to imagine the future with a maniac villain. We see it all in the news: Osama Bin Laden, Al Qaeda, perhaps even Bush. The Joker merely did it under the guise of makeup.

2 week's

I was away in the army for 2 weeks of reservist. Indeed, much can happen in 14 day's time. On the 4th day, my cousin broke to me the news of my grandpa's death. Over the first weekend, I spent most of my time at the wake. It was my first full-fledge experience, and it was rather interesting.

I wasn't close to my grandpa at all. Due to some fued, me and some of my cousins from the same batch never really connected with him. If I were critical, we were merely following through the motions. Of course there were moments of pity at the depart of a family member, but everyone was consumed with the logistics of the funeral that it left not much time for tears.

It was a state of excess: burning paper, food, lots of drinks, trash, noise, banners, etc etc. I almost witnessed a gang fight (my uncle invited his "friends" along), saw long-lost relatives, and saw with my own eyes family unity. The final burning of house and cars and everything extravagant sumed it up.

Being back in the restraints of the disciplined and routine army life made me miss the carefree and simplistic environment, which some may deem as "protected" or "entrapped". We sleep before 12midnight for most nights, three meals provided, and we exercise. We have lunch and rest until 1.30pm, and are free for most nights after dinner. Away from the rest of the world, free time was spent playing "dai-dee", eating tidbits, and making fun of one another. I miss that kind of lifestyle. Once away from it, I felt like I needed to treasure my time out more because so much was spent doing nothing much. It made me feel like i can achieve more with 24hours, that the possibilities are limitless.
Being in the company of married men who drive also hit me, that I need to discover what I truely want out of life.

The reservist coincides with my half-yr resolutions, and the haircut symbolises a new phase of the year. I do not regret the haircut. Good men look stunning in anything. =) This is, again, the year I live better.

In her prime, Faye Wong's vocals can do wonders. This is, IMO, the best version of this song, chinese or english, male or female covered. Ethereal vocals aside, the twists and notes in this song are killers, and Faye's vocals sound like a remarkable acrobat. a must-watch.

this song is tragic. it's all about the voice.
