you can never get what you want

today is the perfect example of how Life has a way of denying you its little pleasures.

it was raining an hour or two ago. You'd have hoped it would go on forever, till the wee hours deep into slumber. the pattering on the window works better than any Chet Lam, for u know that everything would be just perfect; a breeze; watching chaos from inside your private sanctuary.

and the downpour became drippings above shelters, silent puddles between cracks.

soon after, you receive your first hangover from the rain: a mosquito bite.

the scratching starts, and the calm ends.

for the first time in my life, i walked in the rain today. it wasnt intentional, or deliberate. i had to get home, and i thought i'd see how it feels like. whoever said it was fantastic must be feeling very dry, because it was chilling. i must admit, stepping on puddles you would otherwise avoid on a dry day was fun. that reckless trampling over everything and anything. Linkin Park's What I've Done was playin on the radio. as i walk, i long for the shelter. it made me appreciate the warmth of a regular humid evening. mildly liberating.

i didnt expect Yaonie to visit today. Everytime i work at CP, he wont appear. it's on days i work in AMK or somewhere that he wants to have coffee. so anyway, we had a quick chat at Mac. a much-needed one given the intensely boring afternoon at work with nothing to do. another example of not getttin what u want, but at least this one turned out great. he cheered me up.

So deal your cards, and i will deal with what it reveals.

LIVE EARTH - 070707
after a failed attempt at askin for company to this crazy idea, i went to PS to catch the live broadcast of the Live Earth concert after work yesterday. i stayed from 11pm thru 3.30am. it wasnt very crowded, and there werent plenty who wore green like me to show support. anyway, for those unsure, Live Earth is a concert across 7 continents, 8 cities, held on 070707, to combat global warming. Musical acts from Madonna, Kelly Clarkson to Sarah Brightman and Metallica congregate at the 8 cities (Tokyo, Shanghai, Hamburg, New York, etc) to perform to stadium crowds, all in the name of spreading global warming awareness and to "answer the call" and make a difference to the way we live, while we still can. Previously after watching AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH, i've made my point here. over the past few mths there's been an increasing awareness towards the consequences, so i shant elaborate. the crisis is real. if not now, when?

anyways silly me thought it was from 7pm till 7am only. so i stayed up all night tryin to catch it. it wasnt until 6am that i realise the whole show ends at 7PM ON CHANNEL 5 INSTEAD(when i checked on Teletext if there's Gilmore Girls today). so in the end i missed a good day's worth due to work. sighhhh.
anywa, there's always youtube. and the joy of community screening, like the one yesterday, next to havin better sound system and larger screens, was seeing the response from everyone. this is the short film that drew the most response. was probably the funniest i've seen from all the snips. so enjoy.

I realise i'm getting more and more impatient these days. i'm not exactly sure if this is a newfound confidence, or just a natural freebie that comes with the gradual crawl towards 25, the so-called "quarter-life crisis". i feel like an overgrown late-bloomer just discovering teenage-angst, falling in love with destructive, head-bobbing rock music and having the greatest urge to smash some non-living things, to do some serious destruction.

either that, or i'm getting more violent by the day.

today i: showed a black face at the waiters of Manhattan Fish Market for not taking my reservation seriously, got unnecesaarily irritated by incessant sms-es that flew my kite and kept askin me bout venues, boldly displayed my unwillingness to compromise to the Principal with regards to prom date. i hate smug damn snobs. it was quite obvious she wasnt very keen on listening to what i have to say, thinking who-the-hell-is-this-small-fry thoughts. well, eat last yr's prom. i'm not goin to compromise this time. take it or leave it.

i fuckin hate smug snobs. i really do. but what scares me the most is that i might be guilty of committing the same crime i so whole-heartedly detest.

so anyways i'm heading this yr's prom com again i suppose. yea.

after which i met Justin and Boo for Transformers.

Transformers is a comic fanboy's fantasy come true. it just shows how much CGI can do nowadays. if this movie came out 10 yrs ago all the transforming might have been done in the shadows. i personally loved the cartoon growing up. it's staple Sat morning fare next to TMNT and power rangers. morphing from cars and jets into heavyweight mechanical beast was pure cinematic wonder.

however, i have my discontent with the film. basically the morphing would be more revealin if it were to unfold 40 times slower, ala the shark attack footages from Planet Earth. if only the dvd had this function. the action scenes were just a whole blob of grey mass metal. you cant see the real action, even thou i caught it in digital format. and some of the plotlines were a tad confusing. poorly edited with a tad of anti-climax. like the whole strip-cop-naked scene was unnecessary. Sector 7 guy was plain annoying. autobots-at-home part was cute, but too hyperactive. Shia was reduced to a hyperventilating nuisance. and but of cos the characters were underplayed. sure they had some great funny lines, but that was pretty it. Shia LaBeuf needs a breakout role, and this wasnt it. but i guess he handled himself surprisingly well to a bluescreen backdrop, running like it really was time to die, and acting shocked like he really saw an alien.

given this is Hollywood, dont tell me u dun see a sequel coming. here's hopin they rope in someone like James Cameron to give it some uplift, like how he added the adventure to horror in Aliens. and i hate it when Spielberg said in promo vids that Michael Bay was the one made to direct this film. Spielberg is selling out!

"Transformers was directed by Michael Bay and executive-produced by Steven Spielberg, and if the credits had been reversed, you can just imagine what a tingly buildup of wonder Spielberg might have gone for. ......Bay, at heart, isn't a fantasist; he's a literal-minded maestro of demolition." - OG.

here's some pics from today

Just Jack - Mourning Morning

Morning lights don't scratch my eyes
Just let me wash up on the shore
I used to have the strangest dreams
But they don't come here anymore
My duvet's laid out like an (outless) with stains to mark the borderlines
Indentations in my pillow I hope won't fade with time

Smoke the roach left in the ashtray on which I choked the night before
Stuck my toes under a clothes like mountain ranges on the floor.
I pick my way through crusty dishes and their greasy chemistry
I washed two cups and the remember that you've left already.

I let you go so reluctantly and I can still hear your lazy symphony
And just when I found my calling, it's another mourning morning

The say the devil's in the detail
I'm gonna blow my eyes instead
I put my memories in a landscape where only reckless angels (tray)
I watch the fingerprints you left like a secret code upon my skin
And I remember when you told me a guilded crown won't make a king

I really want you to stay but I know you have to go
I really want you to stay but sometimes it doesn't show
I really want you to stay but I know you have to go
I really want you to stay let the conversation flow
I really want you to stay but I know you have to go
I really want you to stay but sometimes it doesn't show
I really want you to stay but I know you have to go, have to go again

I let you go so reluctantly and I can still hear your lazy symphony
And just when I found my calling, it's another mourning morning

I really want you to stay but I know you have to go [X7]
have to go again

what am i watching?!

Nothing much to do. actually, i have alot to do. and part of it involves watching movies (besides desperately tryin to finish my overdue books and tidying up my room and gettin prepared for prom 07).

after a shagedelic last week, i'm takin a three day break of sorts. day 1 today was half wasted in bed. i slept till the sinful hot hours of 1pm. damn. went for a spontaneous swim. i have not swam in a long while it feels, and i'm determined to swim more in the coming months. i think procrastination with regards to gettin fit and tan sld stop. right. now.

but it's hard!!!
=(

anyways. here's what i've been watching. today during my tan i was tryin to think deep thoughts. you know, not like 2.1m water-deep thoughts. but like, u know, life changing sparks of genius that might pop as my skin cracks under the sun. hahaha. i dunno why but i got to the reason why i blog. and i might have said this before but to hell i'll say it again. i blog because:
a) i wan to spread good movies and good music
b) i need an outlet of release. writing is therapeutic
c) for distant friends to stay in touch. like dustbin in US.(but dustbin i bet u're havin so much fun u've forgotten bout me! idiot!)QJ and susan having the best time of their lives in europe now. and jennifullofboredom.

ya. the sun only purged out these few reasons. a yr later i'll prob say the same thing again. THEN i'll add another one or two.

yes. what goes around comes around.

anyway here goes.

i caught Marie Antoinette two days ago. this is Sofia Coppola's first film post-Lost In Translation. and this one's tone is totally different from LIT. however, the theme of feminism and lost-woman-tryin-to-find-her-footing is still very much present. i've read extreme reactions to this film. some said it was not historically true, while others praised it for its bold interpretation. basically this is a very lavishly decadent, beautifully decorated and costumed film which focused on Marie's marriage of peace and how she had to deal with the stress of it. at 18( or 19). why do people like to force queens to have sex and procreate?!

but anyway, this is very stylishly done. set to a soundtrack of hip grunge rock from the likes of The Strokes and Siouxie and the Banshee, it emphasised MA's lavish lifestyle comparable to the rock stars of today.except i think they dun have crack then. like Curse of the Golden Flower, the more lavish and elaborate it gets with the cakes and shows and fashion, the more decadent it gets. the costumes, the shoes, the hairs, are just BEAUTIFUL. and Kirsten Dunst has never looked better. she looks like a poised Nicole Kidman, except younger and sexier. KD sld stop doing action hero flicks and do more of these.

but anyway the film didnt show herhead-rolling death. some parts i cant help but feel were mishandled. some plotlines could have been emphasized. but there were some drop dead funny parts.

and as the famous line goes,

"LET THEM EAT CAKE!"

this following section is for my fellow friends like YY Quin and Andy who have caught Deathproof, intend to catch it, a curious fan, or just an avid reader.

Deathproof was initially intended as a two-in-one collaboration between Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino. it was released in the US as such, a 3 hour long feast for fans of the 70s, but due to the poor reception (ie: poor box office), they decided to release it as two separate piece overseas.

the two-in-one is called Grindhouse, a homage to the era of lost cinematic fun where mindless car chases and zombie slashes were loved and utterly entertaining. i cant explain it better, so i'll prob quote somewhere later.

so anyway the RR part is a zombie flick. if the posters below are any indication, i'm guessing it'll be more terrific than DeathProof. thou nothing can be quite compared to QT. feast feast feast.

"In Grindhouse, their crazily funny and exciting tribute to the grimy glory days of 1970s exploitation films, Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez re-create the junk cinema of their youth with a deftly amused appreciation for its cheeseball squalor. But they also celebrate those films for their accidental B-movie nihilism, their freedom. The low-budget, anything-goes genre movies that sprung up like weeds during the '70s had a distinct, tasty decadence — a depraved underground allure. Taken as drama, they were glum and listless, often borderline inept, but they weren't trying to be ''good.'' They were vehicles for sensation — for nudity and zombie flesh, for cars screaming down the road with a death-rattle roar — and since sensation was more or less the only thing alive in them, their cruddiness worked in a peculiar way. In the very apathy of their storytelling, they expressed the blasted, what do we do now? hangover of the post-counterculture era; in their promise of cheap thrills, they offered a down-and-dirty escape from that alienation. They were rooted in the action of the moment, and only the moment. They were drive-in rock & roll.......Growing up in the '70s, I spent my share of time in grind-house theaters, and I can testify: This is exactly what it felt like." - Owen Gleiberman, ew.com

Have you ever felt like someone else's excitement puts u off? not in a disgusted and exasperated manner, but just that their energy drains away yours, slowly taking it away till you feel. . . forgotten.numb. and frozen. like a part of your spirit was trapped outside of your body.

then i switched to some Kelly Clarkson and it turned everything into rage and furious tapping of fingers and toes.

Sarah McLachlan - Good Enough
Hey your glass is empty
It's a hell of a long way home
Why don't you let me take you
It's no good to go alone
I never would have opened up
But you seemed so real to me
After all the bullshit i've heard
It's refreshing not to see
I don't have to pretend
She doesn't expect it from me

Don't tell me i haven't been good to you
Don't tell me i have never been there for you
Don't tell me why
Nothing is good enough

Hey little girl would you like some candy
Your momma said that it's ok
The door is open come on outside
No i can't come out today
It's not the wind that cracked your shoulder
And threw you to the ground
Who's there that makes you so afraid
You're shaken to the bone
And i don't understand
You deserve so much more than this

So don't tell me why
He's never been good to you
Don't tell me why
He's never been there for you
Don't you know that why
Is simply not good enough
So just let me try
And i will be good to you
Just let me try
And i will be there for you
I'll show you why
You're so much more than good enough...

A Prairie Home Companion

There's The Painted Veil kind of awww-movies, where lovers die and you feel for their tragic separation, and then there's A Prairie Home Companion, where there's more than love, death, and tears. There's hearty laughs between old friends, the end of something pure, and the reminisce of the good ol' days. A Prairie Home Companion plays like an ode to Robert Altman's life, for shortly after directing this film, which unforseenly serves as his last, he passed. what's ironic was how i read that this was not intended to be his last, and that he was gonna keep making movies for as long as he could. Sadly, that did not happen. Very often we find the big screen's reel a fragment of life. this is the rare case, in which life mimicks the movies. As A Prairie Home Companion, a live radio show, plays for the last time, so is this Robert Altman's swansong.

To the present MTV-generation movie-goers, the closest one gets to reading the name "Robert Altman" is the movie Gosford Park. his other classics include M*A*S*H, Nashville, and The Player. Sad to say, all of which i've never seen. His trademarks are his multiple characters (but it did not downplay their personality) and overlapping lines, which Meryl Streep and Lily Tomlin perfected while presenting the Honorary Oscars to Altman last year.

A Prairie Home Companion is not a showy movie. There's no obvious climax. no fire, explosions, murders(only deaths), guns, or even sex. well, sex was close. it's a movie for a lazy sunday night, just chilling to cold beer and chips while slopped on the sofa. it's a wispy rumination that slowly builds on heartwarming and tender moments, kinda like watching a group of lifelong frens playing together for the last time, that kinda feeling. The movie is one huge radio show brought on screen. if u love folk and country music, u would probably love this film. but the greatest irony of this film was how death is prophetic. when Virginia Madsen's Angel took away Chuck's life, her comfort to the wife: "The death of an old man is not a tragedy" lingers on with bittersweet aftertaste. the band sings on, "let the light from the lighthouse shine on me". at that moment, i cant help but to think Mr Altman made this movie with it being the last on his mind. the soft treatment towards death, and the soothing of it back to life, and how he died thinking of something high played like comfort, like u knew he was gonna go, and hopefully by watching this movie u'll feel better. therein lies the irony, because we dont. at least i dont.

if i were to watch this like any other movie, i'd probably watch it for the sake of Meryl Streep and Lily Tomlin. but the fact that this was RA's final picture gave me perspective, and that's what everyone who's ever gonna watch this movie sld probably know. As usual, Meryl was beyond good, and who knew she had such a lovely singing voice (see for yourself). it matched Lily's deep Alto perfectly. John C and Woody Harrelson stole the show with their cowboy comedy. but the true joy was seeing Garrison Keillor, whose voice was made to be on radio. seeing it was an added bonus. he also wrote the screenplay.

A Prairie Home Companion, as told in the dvd extra, is still in play. here's another one to add to my list of things to see before i die.

Meryl Streep and Lily Tomlin - My Minnesota Home

Meryl Streep and Lily Tomlin - Goodbye My Mama

I've always loved OG's reviews for his spot-on nuance.

the weather is really humid right now. it's as if there's no air circulation as well. i'm sweating as i'm typing this.

my air conditioner has been dead for close to a yr. there's no cold milk/juice in the fridge. the fan is not spinning fast enough. urgh.

so once in a while when i finish a trail and have nothin to do for the rest of the afternoon except go home and rest and there's no adults at home, i'll go to my parents' room, turn on the air con, ad have the best time of the day till my mum returns at 8pm. u see, turning it on in the day is a blasphemy. so i'd have to do it secretly everytime. today was one of those days. i haven slept in an aircon room for eons! just the quiet cold breeze and the sound of my own breathing. nothin more lovely than that.

and now it feels like hell out here.

there's really nothing much to gush about these days it seem. perhaps i've grown indifferent to alot that's going on. i'm tryin to think of that word,a person who cares about nothing. it slipped my mind it seems.

but what i do know is that some things still cut like a knife.

off to a cold bath.

for susan

A Case Of You

Just before our love got lost you said
"i am as constant as a northern star"
And i said, "constant in the darkness
Where's that at?
If you want me i'll be in the bar"

On the back of a cartoon coaster
In the blue tv screen light
I drew a map of canada
Oh canada
And your face sketched on it twice

Oh you are in my blood like holy wine
Oh and you taste so bitter but you taste so sweet
Oh i could drink a case of you
I could drink a case of you darling
And i would still be on my feet
Oh i'd still be on my feet

Oh i am a lonely painter
I live in a box of paints
I'm frightened by the devil
And i'm drawn to those ones that ain't afraid
I remember that time that you told me, you said
"love is touching souls"
Surely you touched mine
"cause part of you pours out of me
In these lines from time to time

Oh you are in my blood like holy wine
And you taste so bitter but you taste so sweet
Oh i could drink a case of you
I could drink a case of you darling
Still i'd be on my feet
And still be on my feet

I met a woman
She had a mouth like yours
She knew your life
She knew your devils and your deeds
And she said
Color "go to him, stay with him if you can
Oh but be prepared to bleed"
Oh but you are in my blood you're my holy wine
Oh and you taste so bitter, bitter and so sweet
Oh i could drink a case of you darling
Still i'd be on my feet
I'd still be on my feet

Dustbin caught the best of my eyes.

same script different cast

One year ago

TODAY

Ash, Jiahui, Siling

Jamie, Jian Le

Jian Le, 174, me

amazing huh. one year has passed. many have come and gone. Ash remains the life of the party, talking non-stop. without her there's sure to be tons of awkward silences. one year ago i was a newbie tryin to fit in. today i feel ancient as i stare at the familiar faces with mysterious histories. its very ironic how i spend so much time with some of them, yet know close to zilch about them. such can be said for many of my friends. isit their inpenetrable fortress, or my foolish ignorance and lack of empathy?

i'll miss 174, as another one leaves come end june.

Notes on a Scandal

i finally got to watching the delicious Cate Blanchett and the marvelous Judi Dench.

another great film i've seen this year. absolutely wicked screenplay adaptation, "toxic wit", and deliciously twisted. go watch.

Babel

"Those preparing for the dramatic sermon on a theme of global miscommunication and dislocation that is Babel would do well to consult Genesis 11:7-8, the verse in which God decides to incite labor unrest during the construction of a tower with its top in the heavens: ''Come, let us go down, and there confuse their language, that they may not understand one another's speech. So the Lord scattered them abroad from there over the face of all the earth, and they left off building the city.''

God's plan, theologians tell us, was to chastise human arrogance and slow mankind's inexorable drive toward self-aggrandizement via the humility of confusion; His mission was to knock a project of Trump-size chutzpah off the map. But I'm less clear what director Alejandro González Iñárritu and screenwriter Guillermo Arriaga had in mind as the creators of Amores Perros and 21 Grams collaborated on the third of their characteristically flashy, collage-like, multicultural pileups."

---Lisa Schwarzbaum, ew.com

contuary to this critic, i love the film.

YY, i've mentioned b4 tt i wanted to tell u wat Babel meant. this is it.

Shrek 3

Ms Tay flew our kite! in the end me and Peiyih went on a date with Shrek and Fiona and many shrek babies.

light fluff with ironic pop references. the most terrible part had to be the cringe-worthy inclusion of Damien Rice's '9 crimes'. what were they thinking?!?!

ABSOLUTE. TURNOFF.

the best part was the pinnochio nonsense blabber and Gingerbread's life-flashes-before-you-die sequence, at a very funny tea table with three little pigs and wolfie. the sidekicks totally stole the show from shrek and fiona. mike myers cameron diaz and mayb justin timberlake were overpaid and overrated.

before that i was at Minds cafe with these army friends...

Lianglin, Mel C, Justin, and Peng Bin

i need to know the secret to eternal youth from old-bird Pengbin.

i wish there's more in me for you.

Dancer In The Dark

Dancer in the Dark is one of the best movies i've seen this year so far. if not the best, at least the most affecting. tragic storyline, startling performances, a doomed ending right from the start. Notice how Bjork's character, being vulnerable throughout the show, is totally in control and strong during her dream sequences. notice how free-spirited she was during her dream sequences. a Lars Von Trier movie, expect some America mocking/bashing. the gritty camera works made me pay more attention to it, and i was lookin forward to Bjork's songs. there's so much to see in this film, really, besides Bjork and her music.

Saturday, June 02, 2007

i was feeling moody, until
a) i read my frenster comments
b) a fren from abroad told me about the present she got me (a Beatles poster!)
c) online conversations about Hentai, "u r so sexy now" testimonials, movies, and dinners.

sigh. i dunno why.

back to some Mika and Arcade Fire.

Edward Norton

I finally finished Phase One of my Edward Norton marathon.

The Painted Veil

Down In The Valley

Keeping the Faith

Primal Fear

The Illusionist

I am now a certified EN fanatic. EN is officially my favourite actor. just these 5 movies alone showed his diverse range and ability to anchor and command the movie.

next: The Score. Frida. The Italian Job. anyone has American History X and 25th Hour?!?! dying to watch. reviews of my hexology next time if i can.
